spyderspyder
There was a time when a TV programme would have a "cast", presented, perhaps, "...in order of appearance", or, "...in alphabetical order". There may have been a "star" of the show, with the cast list being presented in the form, "Starring...", followed by "Also appearing...", or "Also featuring...". But now, everyone's a star! Instead of a cast list, there is "Starring...", followed by, "Also Starring...", and, "With Guest Stars...", and "Special Guest Stars...". It's just another example of rampant linguistic inflation, whereby all standards have been devalued, and matches such things as the "World Best Seller" label applied to a new novel yet to be published (and the CD appellation, "Best Of", for a singer who had only ever produced one album!) But surely the limit has been reached with the inclusion under "Also Starring" of the bit players such as, "Passer-by #1", or "Bus Driver". sic transit...etc. s.
