AvariCe
Hello all! This is my first topic here. Recently I decided to give subtitle creation a try, after seeing that one of my favourite shows doesn't have subs for my native language. I have though a peculiar problem. I have somewhat of a hearing impairment and I currently lack the time necessary to create a subtitle from scratch. So I figured that I would use an English subtitle as a base for timings and things I tend to miss when watching something and translate from there. Then it occured to me that if I was the original uploader I would be pissed if someone used my work without permission. So I contacted him two days ago, asking for permission and no response as of yet. And herein lies my predicament: What is using someone else's work considered (giving proper credit, of course)? Common practice, casus belli, is it something frowned upon? I am a total noob in the subtitle scene so please take it easy. Thank you for your time and if my question is totally idiotic (as I suspect it is), please remain civil. Cheers, AvariCe. Edit: Made the text a little more readable. BorisVictor
You can use the (mostly English) subtitles for translation. You don't have to ask permission from the original uploader, but you can thank him -if you want- in the comments. You can add to the credit the website from addc7ed if you like.

taytoy
AvariCe Usually, if there's a credit in the sub such as: Sync and Corrected by XXX www.addic7ed.com You can credit that in your new sub as such: Sync by XXX Translated by YYY (you) www.addic7ed.com What matters is the credit in the sub, not the uploader, as sometimes an uploader can upload a sub from someone else. If there's no credit in the sub, then just mark: Sync by ZZZ Translated by YYY ZZZ being the uploader. No need to add Addic7ed as it would probably mean that it wasn't from Addic7ed (you can easily check that by looking for the banner next to the upload, it would generally tell you were it comes from). Good luck.
Vultural
I always credit the original subber in the first commerical break ( even if they may not be the orignal subber ), then credit then during the closing credits, then give myself a nod at the very end. I usually try to contact them and advise of what I am doing (usually Westernizing syntax and streamlining dialogue). Some are appreciative, some shrug, others are possessive and territorial. Most do not care unless you hardcode and place into streeming sites.
