spyderspyder
Hi, all. I store new episodes of tv shows on a 320GB external HD (as well as lots of backups of stuff). Once there is a sufficent number of episodes of a particular show (typically a half season) I burn the eps. on to a data DVD and store it away. On the top of my PC tower sits a mug of pens, pencils, etc. Yesterday morning I caught it with my sleeve and it fell off - onto the external HD, sitting below, plugged in and running. 105 GB of backed-up data - including 105 TV episodes - were lost! The slim, light case, seemingly made of not much more than aluminium foil, and fitting snugly to the drive, was pushed in against the "read-write arms" (whatever) and held there by a small dent. I've managed to rescue around 30 files (accompanied by loud clicks, scrapings and grinding) but the rest have to be downloaded anew. Moral: don't trust, or use, an external hard drive that is not fitted into a chunky, strong and spacious case, or that is not otherwise protected from falling mugs. (Or, maybe, don't put a mug of pens and pencils, etc., on top of your PC.) Cheers, s. Important links: Forum Help.Never look before you leap, it'll spoil the surprise. alex28
Don`t put a mug near a pc. Bad stuff might (did) happen :S. Good thing you didn't lose personal stuff that you couldn't recover. Changing the world. One subtitle at a time.
